RAN Sailing
Швеция
Добавлен 27 сен 2015
We're a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we sold everything we owned and saved money for 1,5 years while living aboard our 40-foot custom built aluminium sailboat. Then we untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016.
Our sailing adventures have taken us halfway around the world, we have welcomed our daughter Vera and bought a new boat. In 2022 we started working on another dream, building our dream boat! It's a 50ft sailboat built out of timber & epoxy/fiberglass and we do everything ourselves.

Ni är helt otroliga, har längtat efter detta. Fortsätt kämpa så vi kan ses på vattnet framöver ❤
I would have loked to have a 3 or 4 strip of oak in a band where your fenders would compress. But i really like watching the quality you are building. Good job
Jag hade inte litat på spännbanden längs däcksidan. Jag hade nog använt ditskruvade stålband istället. Jag hade använt spännbanden som en reserv om det skulle behövas.
What a testimony of accuracy
Earlier I wrote big boat, no, huge boat
I’m a tunnel engineer so I’m used to moving and manipulating heavy objects in a confined space without a crane. I’m not clear on your scheme to flip over the hull but there are some mistakes people make in these situations. Your hull is fairly rigid. When you are sliding the boat out of the barn, as few as three wheels will be carrying the load. If the hull flexes and sags a bit, then maybe a few more wheels will make contact and carry some load. Your track will not be perfectly level. Wheel loads will be higher than you plan if you expect all the wheels to carry the load. You talked about using plywood to make a runway. Have someone check the rolling shear force created inside the plywood by the wheels. The plies can fail at the lamination faces. You might think about renting steel plates used for temporary covering of holes in the street. If you wood sags. The weight will be spread to adjacent wheeels but the whole hull will be more difficult to move as you are essentially pulling the hull up a hill if the track sags. You have done a great job so far. Don’t trust to luck!
Absolutely Impressive
Sure is big
Do you have an estimate of the total weight of the hull and frame which you are going to turn over?
A lot of people, including me, are waiting for the moment you will move the boat out from the barn, turn it an move it back into the barn. That is increadible you will do this yourselves. The whole program of yours is increadible to be done of you two. But of course, we, visitors of your channel do not know what happens when your camera is of line. Anyway, I think that you are doing a hell of a job, producing such a big boat by yourselves. Once you got it out the hull is waterproof as long you have not turned it? But when you have turned it you dont want any rain? Does that mean that all of it has to be done in one day? Days are long now even in the south of Sweden so a day can be almost 20 hours I think. Do you have any coments?
Intense…!!!
Wow! Impressive planning - it looks like you have a lot of contingency plans in place. Good luck!
Cool plan, guys. Good luck, but I don’t think you’ll be relying on it!!!! 🎉😊
Exciting times!
Exciting and nervous times ❤ keep it up,love the content⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️
Malin you are standing up to the pressure very well
There are so many good features in RAN II; I find it difficult to find a favourite one. I like the cutter rig one of my favourites. I had a staysail on my old (1917) gaff ketch, which I no longer own, unfortunately. It was so useful. I love the cockpit tent too. It is easy to get caught out by bad weather. There is so much storage, too.
Wow. How much of this did you have in your head when you were looking for the right farm to buy? That's some serious long term planning, hats off to you three.
Wouldn't it have been easier if the pad you're pulling the boat out on to was paved instead of gravel?
Such a pleasure to watch you and your family. Perfect mix of personal with boat building specifics and work entailed with actual sailing and traveling experiences when possible. You all are the best. Enraptured with how you are getting this boat birthed! Keep up the good work and many blessings for you all!
You have done a great job 👍
Why not use 6 poles at your main supports, 3 pairs using the hoists to lift and then spin it in place . Even outside if you pull it out. Then just rotate it once it's off the ground and push it back in the barn?
I’m feeling the excitement and am really looking forward to seeing this milestone “boat flip”. I mentioned before that I have much the same wheels but I ended up buying those same yellow machine skates for my much smaller H28 and I’ve found them to be terrific and, (because I now move my hull back and forward a bit for access in a somewhat confined area) I have the full load of the boat and cradle on the casters with the wheels really just now act as sort of “outriggers” due to the way I have my cradle set up. I’ll be interested to see how you control the roll from the other side, ie how you arrest the fall as it rolls over the pivot point on the cradles.
I'm a 74 year old male with COPD, retired US Merchant Marine officer, who started sailing before I could talk. Your sailing channel has been viewed since conception, each episode both full of usable information and created with care and knowledge. We are all awaiting the turn of this legendary build. Thank you for your time and all the effort you all extend every week.
Nu e d ju så sjukt fint jobb❤
if you aren't going to use a crane, can't you just rotate the hull inside of the barn?
👍👍👍
Good luck with turning the hull
What you have managed to build is impressive, I hope to one day start my own boat construction project. By the way, I have a question: how many inches thick is the cedar you use for the hull????
Good luck
You are not only a master craftsman, Johan, but (now) an engineer dealing with all of the geometrics and physics of turning your hull over and moving it about without any catastrophic consequences. If any couple can accomplish such a feat, you and Malin can! With so many others who follow your videos, I look forward to the months ahead -- and I am certain that we all wish you well. Give us a peek of what Vera's been up to when you can. 😏
Johan, as usual you are planning things well so it should go OK, But sometimes, with any of the seprojects that guy MURPHY seems to lurk in the back ground. Good luck with the move, I wish I was closer to come and help but New Zealand is as far as from you as one can get. Cheers Ian
The garden and around your farm is looking lovely. A great job on the frames for turning the hull. You guys are so talented. Love the vlog :)
Xlnt job Johan and Malin, and Vera too. Its coming together very well.
How are you going to roll the boat? Carefully I think🙂
With all the muscles that sanding must have made, I figure Johan would just drag the hull out and toss it in the air like some Marvel Universe character. 😅 (j/k) Looking forward to seeing the rigging you come up with. 👍
You both are fantastic! I have all the confidence in you get the turning done. Just keep it easy and safe.
I have seen every episode and never been disappointed in content. Over the years I have watched great seamanship, honest thoughts, development of skills, fantastic views and commentary on places visited and now we are watching a skilled couple building what I suspect will be a perfect boat, accompanied by a ever curious and infectious junior crew member in Vera. I find it starnage that the subscriber numbers are not higher.
I recommend X beams
Crikey, that structure would turn the Queen Mary
I think you should keep everything together. There may be some more build requests in the future. I’m pretty sure everybody’s digging everything you guys are doing here. Maybe your new new career is video/boatbuilders I know a few people that actually might want a version of this beautiful boat including myself. I will take haul 2
Once you get to 45 degrees in the turn, the hull will want to “fall” the rest of the way. Will you have a preventer opposite the tree side to ease the hull down to the side?
Yes we will! 😊
@@RANSailing it wasn’t mentioned in the videos, just thought I’d ask. Your doing a great job. I really look forward to each new episode.
Felicitaciones y suerte en la maniobra de dar vuelta el casco! 💪🏻💪🏻🤗🤗
Johan, i think you thought things over well. Still.... 1) I would make some diagonal reinforcements between the brackets in the boat's length direction as when you start moving things there might be some friction in that direction misplacing the brackets during the move. 2) are you not afraid that the hard surface of the wheels in combination with the weight of the construction will damage the plywood layers and dig themselves into the plywood. Did you consider metal or other types of plates as a surface. 3) to assure the the load is constantly carried on all wheels the surface of your plates (plywood, metal or whatever will need to be perfect level over the entire track. How will you deal with that thought i realize that thanks to the gravel underlayer it might be easier as with other under types of surfaces (sand, grass, etc) 4) be careful with the machine transport skits you bought. check on Cutting Edge Construction Australia channel. He used similar skits moving lathes and other heavy loads across a flat concrete floor and the wheels were simply pulverized during the move. I think it's shown in this video: "The BIG Horizontal Milling Machine Project | Part 1 | Moving into workshop" Success Jan-Willem
I'm just curious.... Wouldn't it be easier to hire a crane with heavy webbing straps to pickup and roll the hull over, facing up?
Good luck!
I am just afraid of the surface you will roll on, if not perfectly flat, it will introduce torsion forces on your hull. The same as for a truck, they have a subframe to compensate the torsion.
You should see if anybody in the area has goats
So you wheel it out of the barn, flip it over and wheel it back in. But when you flip it, it will no longer be aligned with the barn door, so we need to be able to move the entire thing sideways also? Note: I have never flipped a boat Edit: oh the wheels can turn
So that’s why Vera learned to ride a bike… to pull the hull out of there🤭! Hope everything goes to plan!…
